Embodiment Phase for Enhancing the Sense of Body Ownership to Non-Human Avatars

When using non-human avatars in VR, there is an issue where the sense of body ownership—the feeling of recognizing the avatar as one's own body—is difficult to enhance. Experiments using avatars typically include an embodiment phase designed to induce the sense of body ownership. This phase generally involves looking at the avatar through a mirror or gazing directly at the avatar to confirm the correspondence between the avatar's movements and one's real-world movements. However, with non-human avatars, the general approach may not sufficiently enhance the sense of body ownership. Consequently, it remains unclear what specific task in the embodiment phase should be performed for how long. Therefore, this study investigates the effects on the sense of body ownership toward non-human avatars by performing a task designed to strongly recognize the avatar's body shape in the embodiment phase. |
