A Communication Support Device for Promoting Interaction with International Students

We aim to create a shared communication space that reduces conversational awkwardness in intercultural interactions involving international students and enables more natural multilingual dialogue. As a prototype for evaluation, we developed a self-standing, semi-transparent partition system. The system automatically transcribes speech and translates utterances, displaying mirrored subtitles on both sides of the partition so that participants can share each other’s spoken content in real time. In addition, animated projections provide spatial guidance that gently encourages users to stand in face-to-face positions, supporting smooth interaction without relying on personal devices. By integrating environmental cues with bilingual textual support, the prototype offers an ambient setting that facilitates mutual understanding and engagement. Future work will include in-situ evaluations in real-world contexts and extensions to support remote communication across geographically separated sites. |
