Walking Assistance for Visually Impaired People Using Spatial Audio Navigation Based on Tactile Paving Detection

This paper proposes a spatial audio navigation method using image recognition technology for assisting visually impaired pedestrians. The objective of this study is to enable users to walk smoothly while generally following tactile paving, rather than physically confirming the position of tactile paving at every step in situations where the surrounding environment has already been determined to be safe. In the proposed method, tactile paving is detected from images captured by a camera, and the direction of movement derived from its positional information is presented through spatial audio in a short and intuitive manner. To improve direction recognition accuracy, temporal and repetition-based encoding was incorporated into the spatial audio signals. Furthermore, the system was designed to promote direction perception based on relative changes by combining sound-image transitions with the number of presentations. Two audio patterns were designed and evaluated experimentally, and the results confirmed favorable direction recognition accuracy for the audio pattern involving transitions from the front toward the left or right. |
