Non-Intrusive Monocular 3D Ball Tracking via Infrared Shadow Geometry

Accurate 3D ball trajectory measurement is useful for motion analysis, training support, and decision support in ball sports. Conventional approaches such as stereo camera systems and Doppler radar can achieve high accuracy, but they require costly installation and operation. This paper presents a 3D ball trajectory measurement method using a monocular infrared camera and an infrared light source. The proposed method observes the ball and its infrared shadow on the ground within the same frame, and estimates the 3D ball position from the geometric relationship between the camera ray and the light-shadow ray. This enables non-intrusive 3D trajectory measurement without requiring synchronization between multiple cameras. |
