Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recently, "bird baths" have been installed in various places with the aim of conserving wild birds. In this research, we propose and develop a Convolutional Neural Network-based system for automatically detecting birds appearing in the installed bird baths and recognizing species of the detected birds to estimate the effectiveness of the bird baths. As for the bird detection, we propose a method combining Single Shot MultiBox Detector (SSD)-based object detection with reconfirmation process. As for the species recognition, a VGG16 network is trained and utilized. Results of experiments using images automatically captured in real environment show that the best bird detection rate is approximately 85%, and the species recognition accuracy is approximately 67%.
