International sporting events are widely reported when good results are achieved, with support from governments and companies, and an increase in the sporting population is noted. However, empirical research on this causal relationship is limited. This study quantitatively examines the impact of national team performance on the playing population for e-sports. A difference-in-differences approach was used, which exploits the unpredictability of athletes' performance as a quasi-experiment and utilises differences in the playing population between countries that performed well and those that did not. Data from Google Trends was used as a proxy indicator for playing population. The analysis revealed that national team wins increase the player population by 9.19% in the short term, but that this effect disappears within two weeks of the start of the tournament. The study contributes to policy, research and business as a rare empirical finding on sports populations. |
