Hiragana air-writing interface with pointing gestures

This study proposes a contactless character input system using Air-Writing, a method where users write characters in the air with their fingers or a pen. A major issue with Air-Writing is that characters often become single-stroke, making recognition difficult. To address this, we implemented gesture recognition to segment strokes and applied a character recognition system trained on an existing character image database. The system first generates Air-Writing character images and then recognizes them using a pre-trained model. Experimental results showed an overall recognition accuracy of 87.2%, demonstrating the effectiveness of stroke segmentation. However, the accuracy remains lower than the 96.7% achieved in previous studies. Future work will focus on improving recognition accuracy to enhance the usability of Air-Writing as an intuitive input method. |
